What Is DRAM?

DRAM is the most common type of computer memory and is widely used in digital electronic products that require low-cost and large-capacity computer memory. Then what is SDRAM? It is short for synchronous dynamic random access memory and it has a synchronous interface. Through this interface, the change of the control input can be recognized after the rising edge of its clock input.

When talking about SDRAM vs DRAM, history needs to be mentioned. Dr. Robert Dennard invented DRAM while working for IBM in 1967 and obtained a patent for this breakthrough technology in 1968. Danard’s invention is called a DRAM memory cell, which uses a single transistor to read from and write to capacitors that store data.
Dennard's single-transistor memory cell technology has produced many innovations, including SDRAM synchronized with the computer clock, which improves the efficiency of reading from or writing to random access memory.
The previous memory storage form was as large as the room and required constant cooling. However, with the advancement of memory storage technology, these devices have become smaller and cheaper. The DRAM invented by Dr. Dennard made a huge leap in making computer technology smaller and cheaper, and therefore easier for ordinary consumers to use.
The dynamic random access memory (DRAM) uses a transistor to store data on a capacitor, but unless the capacitor is regularly recharged, the capacitor will lose data due to loss of charge. The recharging of the capacitor is the reason for using the word dynamic in dynamic random access memory.
Once the capacitor no longer receives a charge, the data is lost. Once the DRAM receives the command from the user’s interface, it immediately runs asynchronously with the computer’s clock to send the command, instead of waiting like the SDRAM to synchronize with the computer’s clock.
SDRAM is synchronized with the computer’s clock to enable it to send instructions more efficiently by joining the pipeline of other instructions being processed by the computer.
The pipelining processing of information in the computer allows it to receive another command before completing the processing of the previous command. This allows SDRAM to run at higher speeds, making it the most popular form of RAM on computers.
