In the coming Windows 10 update, the snap-in Disk Management tool will have a new appearance and features. MiniTool Software will show you some information on this Windows 10 new Disk Management tool: Manage Disks and Volumes.

Windows 10 Will Have a New Disk Management Tool

Windows 10 itself has a disk management tool and it is Disk Management. You can use this snap-in tool to create a new partition, delete a partition, format a partition, change driver letter, or do some other things.

But there are some limitations in this tool. For example, you can’t use it to move partitions, migrate Windows OS, convert FAT to NTFS without data loss, and more. Thus, there are tons of alternatives for it, including MiniTool Partition Wizard.

Microsoft is going to release a new and modern Disk Management for Windows 10 in the next update. As an early version of the upcoming Windows 10 update, Windows 10 Build 20175 has been released to the public and it contains this new disk management tool. If you have installed this build, you can preview or even try this feature.

Manage Disks and Volumes

At present, this new feature is hidden. But you can access it by going to Start > Settings > Storage, and it is based on Microsoft’s UWP principles.

This Manage Disks and Volumes tool will show you all the disks and their volumes on the computer. The following interface shows that there is only one disk on the machine. This disk is divided into three volumes including an EFI system partition, a basic data partition, and a recovery partition. You can see the total capacity of the disk. You can also see the size of each volume.

When you click a volume, you can see two options: Explorer and Properties. If you click Explorer, you can access that partition in File Explorer. If you click Properties, you can manage the selected volume.

For example, if you want to change or arrange a drive letter for that volume, you can click Change Drive Letter and you will see the Change Drive Letter interface pops up. Then, you can select a letter you want to use from the drop-down menu. Then, you need to click OK to save the change.

You can also see a graphical representation and the available storage space of the selected volume on this page. You can also change the volume size according to your requirements: click Change Size and you will see a small pop-out window.

You can see the current size of the selected volume. Besides, you can also see the maximum size and the minimum size you can set for this volume. Then, you can change the size by typing the number in the box of New (MB). Then, click OK to save the change.

Now, this Windows 10 new Disk Management tool only has limited features. It is not as advanced as the classic tool. But it can do some basic operation for you. It is just the beginning of this new tool. Microsoft will develop more functions for this tool in the future.

Windows Disk Management Alternative

As mentioned in the beginning, there are a lot of Windows Disk Management alternatives and these alternatives are very powerful.

Take MiniTool Partition Wizard as an example. You can use this free partition manager to do a lot of things like copying disk, copying partition, recovering partition, and more. When a Windows built-in tool can’t meet your requirements, you can ask a third-party tool for help.
