The next-generation SSD is PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD and now many companies are developing it, including ADATA. ADATA PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD is using Silicon Motion’s SM2267G controller. In this post, we introduce some information about this SSD and its controller.

ADATA PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD

ADATA is one of the world’s largest suppliers of memory modules & SSDs. It is a noteworthy company which uses the latest technologies. The next-generation SSD from ADATA is using a PCIe 4.0 x4 interface featuring a Silicon Motion controller.

To be specific, now ADATA just has a mockup of PCIe 4.0 x4 SSD which is based on Silicon Motion’s SM2267G controller. That’s why there is a sticker on the rear PB that says SX6000 which is a low-end drive.

The sequential read speed of the drive is set as up to 4GB/s, and the sequential write speed is up to 3GB/s conservatively. Of course, this value is below what you typically expect from a next-generation SSD and higher than the current-generation drive.

However, you should remember that although the firmware for SM2267 is still stay at the early stages of development and performance, it will be much higher when the drive is released next year.

Referring to the functionality of one thing, ADATA PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD as well as its SMI SM2267 controller are actually the next-generation products with a new engines inside as well as other improvements. You can see that the controller supports the newest types of 3D NAND flash memory. Thus, SMI is validating it with various chips currently.

Now, the exact release date of ADATA PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD based on SM2267 controller is not determined because the information released sometimes contradicts depending on the source. However, it is sure that the drive will be released to public in the first half of 2020.

Recently, Silicon Motion has captured a noteworthy share of turn-key SSD makeet. It has a modern controller lineup including the top-of-the-range SM2262EN, the mainstream SM2263XT/SM2263G, and the SM2263EN for entry-level 3D QLC NAND-based SSDs.

SM2267G is SMI’s PCIe 4.0 SSD controller. It is in its final development stages and it will be available in the near future. The above mention ADATA PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD is just such a prototype.

The company is going to make SSDs featuring a PCIe 4.0 x4 interface to be available in the second quarter of 2020 and aligning it with a launch of a next-generation mainstream PC platform.

According to the statement from the company, Silicon Motion’s PCIe 4.0 x4 controller belongs to a new design generation of its products. And now we hope to see some new features in the future, such as excellent performance, compatibility with new types of 3D NAND flash memory, and endurance improvements
