COMPUTEX is a computer expo held annually in Taipei. This year, Essencore 2 TB PCIe 4.0 SSD was displayed in the expo. This SSD has a feature which other drives don’t have. It is using the Phison PS5016-E16 controller which is the first PCIe 4.0 client SSD controller. Now, see this post to learn the detail.
Taipei International Information Technology Show, which is also known as COMPUTEX Taipei, is a computer expo held annually in Taipei, Taiwan. Since the early of 2000s, it is in the list of one of the world largest computer and technology trade shows.
This year, COMPUTEX was held from May 28 to June 1 with the theme of AI & IoT, 5G, Blockchain, Innovations & Startups, and Gaming & XR. There were 1,685 exhibitors with 5,508 booths this time. Many famous enterprises in the field of computer participated in this expo.
Essencore 2 TB PCIe 4.0 SSD Enters the Game
This year, one of the underlying themes was the number of PCIe 4.0 SSDs on the display. The expo shows that at present, only the drives which are powered by Phison’s E16 controller might be ready for mass market. However, it still depends on which company you ask.
It is not hard to see that some of the companies are glad to go with the turn-key solution for entering the market as soon as possible, while others just want to sit back and tweak the firmware for better performance in the feature, but they will release their products later.
However, the Essencore drive which is displayed at the show has one feature which none of the other drives has.
What it is?
It is using the host interface of PCIe Gen 4 x 4. And its capacity reaches up to 2TB.
It also uses the Phison E16 controller and this is the most important aspect.
Do you know about this controller?
This Phison E16 controller uses either Toshiba NAND flash, Micron NAND flash, or SK Hynix NAND flash. After visiting the expo, we saw that all the designs from the participant companies used one of the first two, and no one was willing to commit to the SK Hynix NAND at this point.
Moreover, suppose that Essencore is a family brand of SK Hynix, it doesn’t take much to put two and two together. Considering the specifications the comoany supplied at the booth, it would appear that the Hynix NAND can still easily and sufficiently hit the 4.8 GB/s limit of the E16 controller.
According to the saying from Essencore, it seems that the computer is still thinking about how and when it will put a PCIe 4.0 SSD into the market. At the same time, it is also considering whether it is a good idea to use the Phison E16 solution.
Perhaps, the company is still waiting until the newer controllers are available before involving in the product line. There will be more information release in the near future.
