Windows 7 Update Support Continues until 2023
Lately, we have written one article to tell you Microsoft will stop offering security update and service packs for Windows 7 on January 14, 2020.
Now, Microsoft has stepped up and noted that, and it will continue offering Windows 7 Extended Security Updates before January 2023. And this gives Windows 7 users three more years to migrate to Windows 10.
This is because Microsoft has bowed to the reality that enterprises won’t purge Windows 7 by its January 2020 retirement and they might be on a longer trajectory for being able to migrate to Windows 10.
You know, there are a number of computers still running Windows 7 although Windows 10 has been released for a very long time.
There are many reasons for staying an old OS like Windows 7: you may think the OS is working very fine, you don’t want to shell out money to replace something that hasn’t been broken. Besides, for enterprises, it is a huge take to move hundreds or thousands of PCs from a version of Windows to a new one especially if proprietary software goes wrong on Windows 10.
Microsoft Plans to Sell Support for Windows 7 after 2020
What’s more, there is a big caveat: Microsoft will charge for security updates for Windows 7 until 2023.
In detail, the updates past January 14, 2020, will be sold to users on a per-device basis. And the prices to buy those updates will keep increasing each year.
Besides, some Home version users won’t be able to get the updates since Extended Service Updates will be only offered to Windows 7 Pro and Windows 7 Enterprise customers in Volume Licensing.
For those customers who have a Windows software assurance plan in place or have subscriptions to Windows 10 Enterprise or Windows 10 Education, discounts will be offered. For users who pay for the Windows 7 updates, they will be able to continue using Office 365 Pro Plus.
In addition, Microsoft has also announced the release of Desktop App Assure service from Microsoft FastTrack, helping to resolve the compatibility issues between Windows 10 and Office 365 ProPlus app.
According to this company, the apps that work on Windows 7 will continue to work on Windows 10, all future feature updates as well. And Microsoft also notes that this service is part of its commitment that will eliminate app compatibility as a roadblock to migrating from Windows 7 to Windows 10.
Bottom Line
Microsoft will sell post-2020 support for Windows 7. If you are not willing to pay for security updates, we suggest updating to Windows 10 before the operating system’s January 2020 retirement date.
