Samsung had announced the roadmap for QLC SSDs and the second-Gen Z-NAND SSDs. And we will show more information about these two series of Samsung SSDs. Keep on your reading for getting more information.
Samsung Releases Roadmap for QLC SSDs and the Second-Gen Z-NAND SSDs
Samsung has shown a series of announcements of its memory and storage products at its Samsung Tech Day event. And with more and more dense and cheap solid state drives stepping into the market, the face of the data storage has been changed gradually.
The first 3D NAND technology was introduced by Samsung, so it’s the leader of the storage industry for several years. However, Samsung lagged competitors on the QLC aspect, especially the Intel and Micron has already shipped QLC SSDs into several market segments. But, Samsung is going to release the QLC products with a new line of QVO-branded SSDs.
Samsung QLC SSDs
Samsung has increased the density of its 3D V-NAND five years ago and its previous-gen V4 flash was 64 layers. But now, Samsung plans to go on to the 90 layers with V5.
Besides the layer increasing, there is another important improvement of the V5 90 layer NAND SSD. The V5 QLC SSD will come in a 1TB SSD and its density will increase 33% than TLC. In addition, Samsung also announces that it will develop some higher-performance 512GB density die that is faster than the QLC flash. This new high-performance variant boasts 37% faster read and 45% faster write latency than their competitors. The 1TB die also has high performance. It operates at 1.4Gbps that is nearly twice faster than other flash drives which operate in the 800Mbps range.
Samsung also shows that it will release the V6 flash which even has better performance. And it is less than 100 layers, but the exact number of layer is obscure. The Samsung 970 EVO SSD with V5 TLC NAND also will be launched. Samsung will increase its capacity to 2TB and will increase the throughput to 3GB/s. It is striking.
In addition, other Samsung SSDs, such as the 860 QVO SATA SSD, 980 QVO NVMe SSD, and BM 991 NVMe SSD, also will be announced in the later.
Samsung Second-Gen Z-NAND SSD
Samsung designed the second-Gen Z-NAND, which will be a cheaper substitute of the Intel’s Optane. Instead of starting from a black drawing board, Samsung simply modified existing SLC flash by shrinking the wordlines and bitlines. The second-Gen Samsung Z-NAND SSD comes in both SLC and MLC flavor. The SLC can double increase the density of their first gen, which is 128Gb.
The capacity of the second-Gen Samsung Z-NAND SSD is various from the 800GB to 4TB. It would be a good choice for those users who prefer larger capacity solid state drives. And as to many users would like to substitute their original drive without losing any data, a professional partition manager would be a good assistant since they can use it to migrate OS to SSD.
So the roadmap of the Samsung QLC and Z-NAND SSD has been announced. And we can know Samsung also try their best to improve the performance of the Samsung SSD.
Final Words
From this post, we can get the information that Samsung will launch the QLC SSD and the second-Gen Z-NAND SSD. And the roadmap also is announced on the Samsung Tech Day. So we also hope good performance will be brought on the later Samsung QLC SSDs and Samsung Z-NAND SSDs.
