Not long ago, ADATA renewed its most aggressive portable SSD lineup in history. And recently, it renews the entire product line again and steps into 3D NAND by releasing SD700. Though other products keep similar names and model numbers, the SD700 is different – it shows up as a new product with rugged specifications.
ADATA Rolls out New SD700 Portable SSD
In September, 2018, SD700 portable SSD – the new external SSD of ADATA (a memory and storage manufacturer) – made its debut in India. The read speed of it is up to 440 MB/s while the write speed is up to 430 MB/s.
Don’t worry if your external hard drive is damaged.
Two outstanding features of this new portable solid state drive are:
- A completely new storage experience;
- Super high performance-to-price ratio.
Other changes you may find in this SSD:
- Lighter in weight
- Less noise
- Better durability
- Stronger shock resistant
- Better portability
- Better overall performance
- …
SD700 Component
The SM2258 controller and 384Gbit TLC 3D NAND are introduced in SD700 to achieve interesting raw capacities. Though the 3D NAND exists for many years, it is only available in Samsung products until the release of SD700 portable SSD. Compared to the 2D flash, the 3D NAND has mainly 2 advantages:
- Increase the endurance
- Reset the lithography clock in many cases
To tell the truth, only 288GB of the raw NAND is inside the case among the 256GB of data capacity you can get access to.
Apart from that, the extra space is programmed by ADATA for 3 purposes: 1. wear leveling; 2. SLC writes; and 3. background operations. The larger the SD700 SSD is, the more space there will be to write data to the SLC programmed area. Though sharing the same performance specifications, these three capacities enjoy different real-world performance. This is even more obvious when large amounts of data are transferred.
All of these contribute to the read and write speed of SD700 series.

IP Rating
The SD700 series have one of the highest IP ratings you can see on a portable SSD (generally, the rating of commonly seen products is IP65). With such high rating, the water resistance level was quantified.
- IPx5 provides splash resistance.
- IP6x provides dust resistance partially.
- IPx8 provides total resistance (which it is immersed up to a specific depth).
As a result, the SSD is able to prevent the ingress of fine dust particles.
Packaging
The SD700 is said to be designed to pay tribute to the Ultimate SU800. The Chroma reflective blue design is adopted by the package; this is the same as the 2.5-inch SSD. You can find the following items easily inside the package:
- The drive
- A paper quick start guide
- A cable (USB Type-A to USB Micro Type-B)
Software
Actually, no expansive software package can be found in the SD700 series. However, it allows the work with the SSD Toolbox of ADATA. Originally, the software for the internal products is designed by ADATA. With such software, you’re allow to do 2 things:
a). check the amount of wear to the flash.
b). execute maintenance functions like secure erase.
Learn how to erase a disk.
Learn how to erase a partition.
Capacity, Price & Warranty
Till now, mainly two capacities of SD700 portable SSD are available at both Amazon and Newegg: one is 256GB and the other is 512GB. The difference is: you can find both color options at while only the all black option is available at Newegg.
As for the price, the 256GB SD700 sells for about $109.99 while the 512GB model sells for about $189.99.
In terms of the warranty, no matter which model you choose, you’ll enjoy the 3-year warranty ADATA has provided.
