You must note that Toshiba has color-codes its hard drives. Its aim is to help you to pick out the proper hard drive you need for corresponding storage requirements. You may ask does this action can help all of you. Perhaps, an industry-wide standard is much more necessary.
Nowadays, One Drive Fit All is gone. Instead, the hard drive manufactures begin to product different kinds of hard drives for different usages.
Recently, Toshiba has just released two new hard drives: S300 hard drive for the surveillance and V300 hard drive for the V300 Video Streaming hard drive.
To help you make a good distinguish among the hard drives, Toshiba color-codes its hard drives. Just like this time, the new S300 Surveillance hard drive is coded green, and the V300 Video Streaming hard drive is coded blue.
Different Colors, Different Usages
The Toshiba S300 and V300 hard drives are not the only two drives which are color-coded. Now, we will introduce some main Toshiba hard drives to you.
Toshiba S300 Surveillance Hard Drive
The new Toshiba S300 Surveillance hard drive can be used to run 24*7 with up to 64 security cameras. According to the Toshiba Company, this hard drive “is designed for high speed, capacity and reliability to ensure the mission-critical surveillance footage can continually be recorded.”
Toshiba V300 Video Streaming Hard Drive
This new V300 Video Streaming hard drive is developed to “stream, record, edit and play video on digital video recorders (DVR), network-video recorders (NVR), set-top boxes and TV” sets.
The company says that this hard drive spins slower and it uses 25% less energy than a P300 Desktop PC drive. Thus, it generates less heat. Besides, it owns a bigger (64MB) buffer and use “Silent Seek Technology to minimize noise and heat during operation”.
Toshiba N300 NAS Hard Drive
The Toshiba N300 NAS hard drive is coded gold. This hard drive is designed for small business & home office users with network servers.
With this hard drive, you can share files in a network, back up and safeguard your important business data and access critical data 24*7 without down time.
Toshiba X300 Performance Hard Drive
The Toshiba X300 Performance hard drive is coded silver. This hard drive has high performance and responsive game play, which is specially designed for gamers, graphic designers and video editors.
You can use this hard drive to store large capacity gaming libraries, high resolution graphics and videos. Also, you can use it to access large data quickly.
Toshiba P300 and L200 Hard Drive
Both Toshiba P300 PC Desk hard drive and L200 PC Mobile hard drive are code red.
The P300 PC Desk hard drive is designed for home and office computers, and it has balance of performance and reliability. With it, you can expand the storage capacities for desktop computer, and update the storage performance for the desktop computer.
The L200 PC Mobile hard drive is designed for mobile computer and console gaming. Its advantages are lower power profile and quite operation. You can use it to expand storage capacity for laptop and compatible gaming console.
Is This Color-coding Method Really Useful?
You may know that the Western Digital (WD) is using this color-coding method for a long time.
For example, the WD blue drives are all-rounders, the WD black drives have high performance, the WD red drives are designed for NAS servers (read-oriented), the WD purple drives are used for surveillance applications (write-oriented), and the WD gold ones are “enterprise-class hard drives”.
On the other hand, Seagate also takes this method.
Does this color-coding method can help anyone? Let see this true example: The Toshiba N300 NAS hard drive is coded gold, and the WD corresponding hard drive is code red. If they keep consistency, this color-coding method is useful. But they didn’t.
Thus, a world standard would be helpful.
