Will Windows 10 Ditch Live Tiles in Start Menu?

Microsoft mistakenly leaked an untested Windows 10 preview build to the Fast and Slow Insider rings, and it unveils some new features of Windows 10 we haven’t seen before. It reveals a brand-new look of Start Menu.

An image of the new Start Menu shows that it lacks live tiles and replace them with regular app icons. Does this mean Windows 10 will get rid of Microsoft’s popular live tiles?

The new Start Menu design is obviously still under development. It still looks rough and incomplete. This is an internal build, and we don’t know if it will be released to the public yet. So the new Start Menu doesn’t necessarily mean Microsoft completely removes lives tiles yet. The new Start Menu design may not be the final design.

How to Use Live Tiles in Windows 10

Live tiles in Windows 10 Start Menu display brief information of an app which can give users a glance of an app without opening it. For instance, the Weather tile displays the forecast of the weather while the News tile may show the headlines of recent news. Now Windows 10 users still own a live tile feature in Windows 10 Start Menu. Normally users can rearrange, resize, and move these live tiles to make them work better.

You can easily pin and unpin tiles to/from Start. To pin a tile to Start, you can right-click an app in the app list and click Pin to Start. You can also drag the app and drop it in the Tiles area. If you are using a touch screen in Windows desktop, you can tap and hold the app from the list and drop it to the tiles area. To remove a tile, you can just right-click the tile and choose Unpin from Start.

You can also resize tiles in Start Menu if you like. There are 4 different sizes of tiles available for choosing: small, medium, wide and large. You can right-click a live tile and select Resize and select a preferred size.

You can also rearrange and move tiles in Start. If you have many live tiles in Start, you may want to move or organize them in groups. You can just drag a tile to move it into the place. You can also drag a tile to the bottom of Start to create a new group, and give it a name.

To turn off live tiles, you can right-click a tile and click More and select Turn live tile off.

Bottom Line

Windows 10 leaked build 18947 update comes with a new Start Menu design without live tiles. Even if this is not confirmed yet, but unfortunately, the glory days of live tiles feature are over. Most Windows 10 desktop users would be more likely to pin everything to the taskbar, because it’s the quickest way to access the apps. So it may not be that grateful if Windows 10 removes live tiles from Start Menu.
