It is known to all that Fantom Drives has long been the supplier of external drives. Recently, the new 1TB G-Force 3.1 drive it releases adds a USB-C; meanwhile, it still carries on its traditional style. This new product becomes a boon to people who have a computer with insufficient space.

If your computer/laptop lacks storage space, it would be a good choice to add an external storage drive. Certainly, the solid state storage (SSD) is better than ever to expand internal storage, since it contains no moving parts.
There are 3 reasons to explain why SSD is better.

  • It is faster.
  • It uses less energy.
  • It is less prone to breakage.

The New G-Force 3.1 USB-C SSD Is Launched

Recently, Fantom Drives launches its latest “G-Force 3.1” USB-C SSD, which is said to be extremely durable.

After testing, I find the new 1TB G-Force 3.1 USB-C SSD is wrapped in aluminum, just like other Fantom Drives lineup. Generally, Fantom Drives are highly functional.

What does the new external storage drive really bring us? As a matter of fact, with a G-Force 3.1 USB-C SSD, you can expand internal storage easily and move large files in a few seconds (for instance, move a 3.75GB file in under eight seconds). This is even fast enough for on-the-go editing.

Actually, both a USB-C to USB-C and a USB-C to USB-A cable are embedded in a Fantom Drive box. This is helpful for people to keep the future in mind; besides, it still gives support to the legacy devices on which the Type-A connector is stilled used.

Four most important characteristics of this G-Force 3.1 external storage drive are: fast, durable, rugged, and adaptable.

Evaluation of G-Force 3.1 USB-C SSD

Features and Benefits

  • The new SSD looks like an extruded metal tube, which has fixed internals.
  • The metal frame offers protection for the delicate internals.
  • The aluminum body serves as a heat sink to avoid overheating, without a fan.
  • A series of vents are created on one end of the plastic to ensure air escaping.
  • There is a bright blue LED.
  • The portability and compatibility allow it to be used in many computers and devices.
  • The black or silver brushed aluminum exterior is selected for durability.
  • The format is suitable for both Windows and Mac.

Capacity and Speed

The G-Force USB 3.1 can be formatted to NTFS or Mac OS Extended. And it has a large capacity range (the price of each capacity is shown for you): 240GB ($89.95), 250GB ($98.95), 480GB ($119.95), 500GB ($148.95), 1TB ($279.95), and 2TB ($589.95).

The Fantom Drives company has said that the transfer rate of G-Force 3.1 USB-C SSD is up to 560MB/s across the board regardless of capacity.

But, after the test, I got different result:

  • When it was used to edit some videos on the go and the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test, the real write speed is a bit below the claimed, usually about 468MB/s.
  • Yet, the real read speed is faster than claimed, hitting around 518MB/s.

Official Speech

Fantom Drives G-Force 3.1 flash storage drives are fully backward compatible with USB 2.0, USB 3.0 and USB 3.1 ports and ship with both Type A and Type C cables. The high-performance units take SSD storage throughput to the next level, allowing the transfer of a 2-hour long high-definition (1080p) movie (4.7GB) in approximately 10 seconds. The drives are available with either a black or silver case forged of solid brushed aluminum, durable enough for nearly any mobile operating environment– says Fantom Drives

The GForce 3.1 provides reliable, high-performance SSD storage to customers with features and functionality unavailable from other manufacturer’s in the same price range. Whether using a Windows or Mac system, the plug-and-play drive connects quickly and delivers the throughput to handle the most data intensive projects.– says Hamid Khorsandi, CEO of Fantom Drives
