How to Find Archived Emails in Gmail on Browsers

Way 1: Via the All Mail Tab

Archived emails disappear from the typical Gmail view. One option for finding archived emails in Gmail is to switch to the All Mail folder view. Here is how to do that:

Step 1: Expand the More tab in the top-left corner. Then, scroll down and find the All Mail label.

choose the All Mail tab

Step 2: Then, you can find the email you have archived. This option is fine if you’ve only recently archived an email, but you might need to use the Gmail search bar to specifically locate archived emails instead. If you have a lot of emails, this option is not suitable.

Way 2: Via the Search Bar

Unfortunately, when you use the Gmail search bar at the top of the Gmail website or in the Gmail app, there is no "Archived" tab available for searching.

You need to know the subject, sender, or subject of archived emails to search manually. Alternatively, you can use the advanced Gmail search filters to search for emails that aren't in typical folders like the Inbox, Sent, and Drafts folders.

In many cases, this should list your archived emails. To do this, enter "-in:Sent -in:Draft -in:Inbox" in the search bar. You can do this in the Gmail app or the Gmail website. You can also add "has:nouserlabels" to your Gmail search query to remove any emails that already have category labels. If they are categorized, you can view emails in marked folders, even if they are archived.

How to Find Archived Emails in Gmail on iPhone/iPad/Android

1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Gmail app.

2. At the top, in the search box, tap Search mail. Enter your search criteria.

3. Tap Search.

  • Your results include all messages except those in spam or trash.
  • When you search a person’s email address, the results will also show emails that include their alias. To limit the search to only the original email, the search should be enclosed in double-quotes. Example: "from:[email protected]".
  • When you search 'from: email", the results will also return Drive files shared by that email address.
