Modern File Explorer Windows 10

Updated: You can now directly download the Files app from Microsoft Store on your Windows computer to experience it.

Windows 10 File Explorer is just such a classic app which is equipped with some modern improvements like the Dark Mode integration. The developers have already created some third-party file managers that can be used to be an alternative to Windows 10 File Explorer. However, there is not a modern solution yet.

Luke Blevins is such a developer who has created a Windows 10 File Explorer with a modern interface and Fluent Design which can support for the Dark Mode.

The Files UWP is a third-party file manager. It can be installed in any Windows 10 machine. Besides, it uses an interface which we have seen in fan concepts previously.

As the creator of the app, Luke Blevins has published it on Github. This will make it to be a community-driven replacement for Windows 10 File Explorer.

At the same time, Luke Blevins also made some explanation in a Reddit post like this:

The app is not intended to be a simple UWP clone of Windows File Explorer’s dense design, but will eventually become a high-quality, modern rewrite that incorporates new UX trends such as Fluent Design elements and minimalism. Being in high school, the problem is I just don’t have the time to work on this project as I did one year ago.

The Files UWP is seemed to be starkly different from the classic File Explorer which is based in the familiar Win32 app model.

Now, you can enter Github to download and install the early builds of this third-party file manager on your computer. However, it is not planning to replace the default Windows 10 File Explorer at least now.

Step 1: If you want to install and test Files UWP, you need to enable the computer developer mode and then download the package from Github.

Step 2: Extract the package to the desktop and then open the x64 folder. After that, you need to install the dependencies certificate one by one.

Step 3: Please right-click on this file “Add-AppDevPackage” and then choose to run it in PowerShell with administrator privileges.

Step 4: At last, you need to follow the instruction on the screen in PowerShell and open the appx file which is located inside the x64 folder to install the Files UWP app.

After these four steps, you can just go to try this app by yourself.

Luke said that his third-party file manage will go to the Microsoft Store eventually, and it will allow users to quickly download and install it on any Windows 10 device.
