At this year’s CES, Mushkin displayed a whole arsenal of drives to customers which show its strength in the field of SSD. Now, in the following contents, we will talk about some new Mushkin SSDs, including Mushkin Source 2, Helix-L, Pilot-E, Carbon X100, and Carbon Z100.
At CES 2019, Mushkin showcased some new SSDs and they attracted many customers. The mentioned SSDs are Mushkin Source 2, Helix-L, Pilot-E, Carbon X100, and Carbon Z100. If you are interested in these Mushkin products, this article will show you some related information.
Mushkin Source 2 SSD
At first, we will talk about the low end product: Mushkin Source 2.
Mushkin Source 2 is a new and advanced version of the Mushkin’s Source SSD, which was the company’s first 3D TLC drive. This Mushkin SSD makes some updates to the Micron’s latest 96-layer 3D TLC flash and Silicon Motion’s SM2258XT controller. However, it is still a budget-oriented and DRAM-less drive.
The capacity of this SSD ranges from 120GB to 1TB. As to the data transfer speed, the quickest versions can hit 560 MB/s sequential reads and 520 MB/s sequential writes. In addition, the random reads clock can be up to 78K IOps, and random writes can be up to 81K. This SSD is not very groundbreaking, perhaps. But the customers need such entry-level SATA SSDs.
Mushkin Helix-L and Pilot-E

Then, it comes with a pair of PCIe x4, NVMe drives: Helix-L and Pilot-E.
In the last year, the early versions of these M.2 gum sticks were spotted at CES. However, it seems that those two have reached the final forms and the launch is nigh.
Indeed, the Helix-L drive is sort of a gussied-up Source 2, packing 96-layer 3D NAND and omitting a DRAM cache similarly. Silicon Motion’s SM2263XT runs the show.
Till now, the capacities of the SSD include 250 GB, 500 GB, and 1 TB. You can choose one capacity version according to your own need.
When referring to the read and write speed, the largest one can stretch to 1710 MB/s sequential reads and 1500 MB/s sequential writes. On the random side, reads will peak at 235K IOps and writes at 272K IOps.
Mushkin Pilot-E
Without a doubt, Mushkin Pilot-E is the most exciting Mushkin’s internal drives. Essentially, this SSD is the same as the Pilot drive, but it is upgraded from the SM2262 to Silicon Motion’s SM2262EN.
Namely, the old Pilot was similar to Adata’s excellent XPG SX8200. However, the top-end Mushkin Pilot-E will be a whopping 2 TB product whose sequential read speeds can reach 3300 MB/s and write speed is up to 2480 MB/s. On the random side, reads will peak at 369K IOps and writes at 377K IOps.
Mushkin Carbon X100 and Carbon Z100
The last is a duo of detachable data devices: Carbon X100 and Carbon Z100 external SSDs.
Mushkin did not offer the exact specification of these drives. However, the Mushkin X100 SSD is a USB 3.1 Gen2 device which can deliver symmetric 1000 MB/s sequential read and write rates reportedly.
The Mushkin Z100 SSD is an aluminum-clad, Thunderbolt 3 drive which is even faster.
