As one of the world’s best-known brands for USB, Bluetooth, and power-related devices, Plugable Technologies launched a new product to help insert and remove compatible SSD. One of the biggest features of this new product is that it is totally tool-free. Please keep reading to know more details about it.
New Plugable NVMe SSD Enclosure Is Launched
On Feb. 13, 2019, the famous manufacturer Plugable Technologies launches the 10GB USB-C (USB 3.1 Gen 2) NVMe SSD Enclosure, which is said to be the first high performance NVMe SSD enclosure. The most obvious feature of this Plugable NVMe SSD enclosure is: it is completely tool-free. What does this mean? It means actually that you either open the USB-C enclosure or secure the drive without a screwdriver.
Besides, it has the following advantages:
- Embedded with a spring-loaded design, making it easy to insert and remove a compatible SSD.
- Includes advanced thermal management, so that the performance will be optimized and device lifespan can be prolonged.
- Utilizes USB 3.1 type C generation 2 connector, so it has a very fast speed – up to 10 gigabits per second.
- Provided with high compatibility, can be used on Windows, Mac OS, and Linux.
- Contains a rugged and durable frame, so it can be transported to different workstations without damaging the SSD put inside.
The Sony rugged hard drive:
Slide Lock
In general, screwdriver is needed by the NVMe SSD enclosures to secure the SSD. Yet, the new Plugable USB-C NVMe enclosure makes things change. You can open the enclosure with a slide lock, instead of the screwdriver. In a word, you can open up the USB-C NVMe enclosure with a clever unlock button and hold the SSD down with a rubber peg.
As long as the SSD is secured, you can slide the cover back into the right place and get ready to use it. (The Samsung SSD 970 EVO is often used in the Plugable NVMe SSD enclosure).
Please note:
It is very easy to trigger the unlock button. So you must be very careful when putting it in a bag (that’s what Plugable suggests you to do). Though Plugable said it plans to improve the slide lock, I think the new USB 3.1 gen 2 enclosure will be used as a tool to access the data on different drives conveniently in most cases, instead of being used just as a portable enclosure.
Heat Dissipation
As I have mentioned earlier, another wonderful feature of this USB 3.1 gen 2 enclosure lies in the ideal thermal properties. It can realize peak heat dissipation by adopting the aluminum body (which is very durable). The heat will be dissipated while you are using the enclosure, so as to help SSDs to maintain high-speed transfers (up to 10Gbps).
Real data:
- It takes up to 40 minutes to transfer 1,000 8MB photos by making use of the traditional thumb drives.
- In contrast, the time will be reduced to 4 minutes if the USB-C NVMe with fast media (such as the Samsung 960 EVO) is used.
The requirements for data migration as well as continuous replacement are both reduced.
The new enclosure of Plugable is suitable for a standard M.2 NVMe drive, allowing for fast, and compact data transfer. You can insert an NVMe M.2 drive into the socket; then, the tensioned rubber peg will hold it in place.
To tell the truth, faster speed can be achieved if the SSD is put in native slots in a PC, or in a thunderbolt 3 NVMe SSD enclosure. Yet, the fast storage definitely demands a fast enclosure, which makes the price higher. Thus, the new Plugable NVMe SSD enclosure is a good choice though it isn’t as fast as Thunderbolt 3 enclosure; it is more cost effective.
