In many people’s point of view, a rugged hard drive should have bright orange bumpers (like LaCie Rugged) or the blue case (like G-Drive ev ATC). Yet, the new Sony PSZ-RA4T Rugged RAID appeared and broke people's traditional concept.
Sony PSZ-RA4T: A Very Portable Rugged RAID
Though there are a lot of rugged hard drives on the current market, such as Seagate Lacie DJI Copilot and G-Technology G-Drive ev ATC, they are not large and fast enough. Hence, here comes a better choice: Sony PSZ-RA4T RAID HDD, which owns an improved speed and capacity. It’s a new star among the portable hard drive category.

As a matter of fact, this Sony Professional RAID HDD is thoroughly ruggedized and it is mainly designed for on-location video production; to tell the truth, it’s a wonderful choice for travelers. A dual-drive unit is added to the Sony PSZ-RA4T RAID box, which allows you to connect 2 rugged hard drives through Thunderbolt 2 or USB 3.0.
As far as I know, the spinning media is adopted in both the 4TB and the 6TB models. Sony wants users to carry this portable RAID around in different cases, so it adds feet on both the bottom.
- I can set the unit on its bottom when I am editing with PSZ-RA4T.
- I can also let the unit on its side when I am carrying PSZ-RA4T in my backpack.
The Sony PSZ-RA4T RAID hard drives are actually full size desktop drives, so the non-wall wart power supply is required. The exterior is covered by a rubber cage; the silicon jacket surrounding most of the PSZ-RA4T seems to be softer than the ordinary rubber you can find on other rugged hard drives. You are able to replace the drive by removing the rubber and opening the case. There is a handle on the top so you can carry it with you conveniently.

- You can reformat the drives by pressing this physical button; but you don’t need to worry when hitting it by mistake since there’s still a procedure to go through.
Cautions
- The power plug located on the back is actually a little elbow connector which may interfere with the connection occasionally.
- An adapter is required if you would like to use the Sony PSZ-RA4T RAID HDD on a computer equipped with Thunderbolt 3.
- Sony is not that professional in hard drive manufacturing (there isn’t much of a track record).
