As you know, the Seagate is a world-famous company concentrated on data storage. It has already released a 16TB hard drive and its 18TB model is on the way. Seagate plans to release the 18TB, 20TB and even the 50TB model (in 2026), the world's largest hard drive, to win the storage war before WD.
Seagate Technology PLC, usually known as Seagate, is an American data storage company. The first 5.25-inch hard disk drive (that is the 5-megabyte ST-506) was developed by Seagate in 1980. For now, Seagate and Western Digital (the biggest competitor) dominate the main hard disk drive (HDD) market. (MiniTool Solution provides wonderful tools for hard drive protection & management.)
The Seagate 50TB HDD Will Out in 2026
Earlier this year (June 4, 2019), the Exos 16TB Hard Drive designed mainly for enterprises was released by Seagate. Currently, with the development of SSD and other advanced drives, the market of the original hard drive has been reducing. Some even said HDD is dead to them.

Is Hard Disk Drive Going to Dead
Almost two months ago, Jarred said the traditional HDDs seem dead to him since the SSDs with large capacity become more and more affordable. That’s really what a lot of people think these days. However, Seagate launched its product roadmap for the next seven years: it will design and release more capacious HDDs in the following years, including the Seagate 18TB HDD, Seagate 20TB HDD and Seagate 50TB HDD – the world’s largest hard drive.

The Near Product Roadmap of Seagate
18TB and 20TB Seagate HDD in 2020:
- The 18TB hard drive is expected to be released in the first half of 2020. It will use Conventional Magnetic Recording (CMR) to store data on 9 drive platters. This is meaningful since Seagate will then maintain its lead over rival Western Digital in terms of capacity.
- Besides, the 20TB Seagate external hard drive will be released sometime later in the year 2020. It will be built on the basis of Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR). Once the 20TB model is out, Seagate company will get a big win of the storage war.
Today, Seagate is the only company mass producing 16-terabyte drives, which are the capacity benchmark for the industry. We are preparing to ship 18-terabyte drives in the first half of calendar year 2020 to maintain our industry capacity leadership– said by Seagate CEO Dr. Dave Mosley during an earnings call
30TB+ Seagate external HDD:
Seagate will gradually change its focus from CMR & DMR to HAMR (Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording), which allows people to store more data in smaller bits. The 30TB+ HDD model is planned for 2023-2024 and it will be more densely packed.
Seagate 50TB external hard drive in 2026:
The company is determined to further develop the hard drive technology so as to finally release Seagate 50TB HDD – the world’s largest hard drive – in 2026; it will be another “hammer drive” of Seagate.
Intro to HAMR
Working process of HAMR:
A small diode is added to each recording head; by heating up a tiny spot on the magnetic disk, the diodes head make it possible and easy for recording head to turn over the magnetic polarity of each stable bit; that’s how the data can be recorded.
Basic merits of HAMR:
- Rapid heating & fast writing.
- Good cooling of the drive plater.
- Ultra-high-efficiency: the heating, writing and cooling process will be finished within a nanosecond.
According to Seagate, it also plans to design drives equipped with multiple actuators as the capacity is booming; the new drives will read & write data even more quickly!
We have no choice but to wait and see how much these capacious drives will cost. The price is uncertain; what we know is that current SSDs become more affordable due to NAND flash memory price fall.
There is still a long way to go in HDD development. And it’ll be interesting to see how the SSDs will develop in the following years. It seems that the SSDs will become faster and faster; while the capacity of HDDs will get bigger.
