StorONE is a company which is transforming software-defined storage with a new class of SDS that can completely maximize SSD performance. Recently, its work with Seagate has got some achievements. Now, you can read this post to learn what are these achievements and how the software works.

Last year, we had posted that StorONE Provided Killer Performance Numbers on Software and Flash Drive. This year, the company works with Seagate to maximize SSD performance. The details are here.

StorONE and Seagate Work Together to Maximize SSD Performance

Last month, StorONE announced record speeds with the combination of Seagate SSD drives and StorONE’s TRU S1 Software Defined Storage solution.

In its recent performance testing, the company combined its software with the Seagate’s enterprise-class SSDs in a virtual appliance configuration. The result showed a breakthrough half a million IOPS with 24 Seagate SSDs and all enterprise-class data protection features running.

In addition, the high-availability, failure-proof VMware cluster with two nodes achieved this throughput on random reads (4K) and 180,000 IOPS on random writes (4K) with latency of less than 0.2 milliseconds.

Why StorONE software can achieve this incredible random read and write speed? Ravi Naik, who is the CIO and SVP Corporate Strategy at Seagate introduced the reason and we summarized it like this:

The StorONE software can elicit the extreme powerful performance of the Seagate SSDs to meet the requirements of mission-critical applications. With the software, users will be able to get the maximum utilization of resources from the Seagate solid-state drives and obtain the best possible TCO through optimized storage capacity & performance.

How StorONE Software Works to Improve Seagate SSD Performance

The StorONE Unified Virtual Appliance configuration with Seagate drives can eliminate the storage performance issues which are caused by server virtualization. StorONE software is running in a simple ESXi VM by using very little memory and compute.

That is to say, it does not need expensive server configurations, big memory caches, or some other expensive add-on products. This virtual appliance supports all hypervisor platforms such as VMware, Hyper-V, KVM, and Oracle VM.

If you are an enterpriser user, Seagate drives will be your good option since they can offer superior drive design and reliability. Then, the test from StorONE shows that they offer excellent performance beyond their competitors. Gal Naor, the StorONE co-founder and CEO, said like this:

We are very proud to have the world’s leading data solutions company as an early investor and partner, on whose drive technology we can reach incredible throughput and deliver all essential data services for managing and protecting data.

For the first time, StorONE supplies you with the full value of the storage resources you have purchased. By using the StorONE’s TRU S1 software, your hardware investment will be able to match the rated IOPS, throughput, and capacities of the drives no matter you are using a SSD, NVMe or HDD.

Additionally, StorONE’s TRU storage software contains the enterprise storage features like unlimited snapshots ability; support for all storage protocols like block, file, and object on the same drives; support for iSCSI, Fibre Channel, NFS, and S3; and support for all drive types in the same server.

At the same time, it is also the first and only program solution that can be applied for all-flash or hybrid arrays, virtual storage, secondary storage, or cloud storage. Thus, there is unnecessary to integrate multiple storage solutions when you can get it in one single software solution.
