Recently, the famous G-Technology released another drive in its product line: G-DRIVE mobile USB-C. Different from the previous Slim and the Mobile which are designed for speed, the new mobile USB-C drive focuses on small size and capacity. Let’s get a further understanding of this new product.

The G-Drive Mobile SSD and the G-Drive Slim SSD USB-C are famous products of G-Technology; they are different from the G-Drive Pro SSD and the G-Drive Thunderbolt 3, which are larger and used as the desktop backup solutions. As you can see, the names of those products are similar; yet, the properties of them are quite different.

Now, the new G-DRIVE mobile USB-C made its debut, which adds a bit more confusion in terms of the name.

  • It is a new G-Technology portable drive with small size.
  • It is a traditional HDD, not the SSD which is expensive and popular at present.

The only downside I’ve found till now is that the speed of G-DRIVE mobile USB-C is not fast enough for video editors.

USB-C Drives or LaCie Method

The target users of this new HDD are people who like to use the “LaCie Method”. What does the Lacie Method mean? Actually, it refers to keeping 10 to 20 LaCie drives in a closet stacked in a shoebox as a backup solution. This is not pretty; yet, it’s practical. You can easily find those orange rectangles in almost every office.

As a matter of fact, the new USB-C drives from G-Tech are an outstanding competitor and even better in the use of space and a better deal. The LaCie may be better for shipping/dropping, but for closet storage and personal use, I think the new G-DRIVE mobile USB-C is superior.
