With the Windows XP fades out of the history, the US Department of Defense decides to abandon XP finally. Instead, it chooses Windows 10 as the new operating system and a contract has been signed to provide ongoing sustainment support for Windows 10.
United States Department of Defense, also called The Department of Defense, is actually the executive branch department of the federal government. Its main responsibilities are: coordinate and supervise all the government agencies and functions that are related to the national security and the United States Armed Forces. The department has the largest number of employees in the world (about 1.3 million active duty servicemen and women according to statistics in 2016).
US Department of Defense Abandons XP
Recently, the 100,000 Defense users finally abandon XP and made the migration to Windows 10. Since Microsoft had officially stopped the support for Windows XP (which made its debut in 2001 as part of the Windows NT family), a large number of users have chosen to upgrade operating system to a newer one (Windows 10 is a good choice).

Contract with Leidos
The Department has signed a contract with Leidos in terms of the system migration. After that, about 100,000 Defense personnel will receive a new “contemporary end user environment” at the cost of AU$67.6 million over a three year term.
David Fawcett, the Assistant Minister for Defense, has said that the Department and Leidos have been agreed on providing persistent support for Windows 10, including:
- The maintenance of the reliable and secure ICT capability
- The management of access to applications for users
The First Tranche of Joint Project 2096
Actually, Leidos has been assigned as the Prime System Integrator in early February and his main duty is to take care of the first tranche of Joint Project 2096 Phase 1. Leidos is expected to integrate these things:
- Selected intelligence
- Selected surveillance
- Chosen reconnaissance applications and data
- …
According to this project, the intelligence analysts will be allowed to search and discover collected data rapidly. In this way, they can make obvious improvements on the intelligence and decision support to Australian Defense Force and whole of government decision makers.
End of Windows XP Support
Windows XP news: specifically, the Windows XP support was officially ended in April 2014.
- Actually, Windows XP was released to manufacturing on August 24, 2001.
- Then, it was broadly released for retail sale on October 25, 2001.
- The extended support for Windows XP was ended on April 8, 2014. Since then, Microsoft will not offer security updates or technical support.

At that time, many users were forced to give up on the 12-year-old operating system for a newer Windows version. But, at the beginning of service termination, only a few users and enterprises are actually willing to abandon the Windows XP. The Windows XP features are not diversified and reliable enough; this may be the main reason why Microsoft was dropping it.
Well, the fact is, there are still many people who don’t want to abandon XP. Till January 2019, there are still 2.18 percent of Windows PCs run XP. That indicates this old operating system is still popular in many countries. Indeed, Windows XP still takes up to 28 percent of the Windows share.
Microsoft Advise You to Upgrade Operating System
