Due to the pressure from the enterprise administrators, Microsoft has enlarged its Windows 10 support cycle again. Recently, it has begun to offer a Linux-like Long Term Support version for Windows 10 Enterprise update customers.

Microsoft Extends Its Windows 10 Support Cycle Again

The frequency of Windows 10 update is a bit high. For example, the new feature updates come every 6 months, but they only support for 18 months.

If you get used to deploy major Windows versions for every five years, you will be afraid of such a frequent Windows update.

Current Support Service

From this month on, the Windows enterprise users who are willing to pay for the Windows Enterprise Edition Premium can get Microsoft’s one more year’s support.

Actually, these new changes aim to encourage the slow-moving enterprises to increase the update tempo for millions of Windows 7 computers before the older operating system reaches its retirement data in less than 500-day.

The announcements of this month are the newest twist about the series of extensions in three years since the Windows 10 initial release year in 2015.

You must know that in November 2017, Microsoft has extended the support for version 1511 by six months. That is to say the support lasted to April 2018 which has passed already. Maybe, this is the reason why the blog which announces this change is no longer online now.

In February 2018, Microsoft also released similar 6-month service extensions for Windows 10. But, this new and 24-month support lifecycle only worked for the Enterprise and Education Editions. So, if your company devices are running Windows 10 Pro, they need to be upgraded every 18 months or sooner.

This month, Microsoft added an extra 6 months support for Windows 10 versions from 1607 to 1803. It means that the support will last for 30 months from the original release date. Still, this extension can only apply on the Enterprise and Education editions.

Microsoft’s Plan

For the new versions, Microsoft is going to separate support life cycles for the twice per year releases. In detail, the March updates will offer an 18 months support cycle and it will support all editions. And the September update will get a longer up to 30 months support cycle for Enterprise and education Editions.

Besides, all of the Windows 10 Pro will get a support cycle for 18 months, and the Windows 10 Home has no defer updates.

Microsoft Offers Linux-like Support for Windows 10 Enterprise

Now, Microsoft is going to apply a release frequency which is similar to what the Linux users get used to. Take Ubuntu Linux as an example, it has a nearly identical twice-yearly release plan, and offers Long Term Support versions in spring and fall.

A similar timeline was created for Windows 10, and it used the new guidelines. You can see that the result is striking. Microsoft doesn’t call out “major” and “minor” release clearly in the schedule. But obviously, it will come in the feature.

Suppose that you are responsible for the wide-scale deployment, the 30 months support cycle is the exact reason to pay for Enterprise updates entirely.

If you think Microsoft will take about 6 months to calculate the kinks in a new release and the Enterprise administrators will take the same time to fix the issues with the line-of-business apps and installed hardware, the update cycle will still be the tight every-two-year.
