Have you noticed a longer wait time for PC shut down recently? Even sometimes it takes two minutes to shut down the computer. It is not your computer hardware causing this problem but Windows 10 USB-C bug makes it significantly longer to execute instructions like shutdown or system sleep. Let’s go to see some details now.

Windows 10 Slow Shutdown Caused by USB-C Bug

Have you found your PC is acting a little wonky of late, for example, delay shut down? It could be caused by a newly released bug that affects how long it takes a computer running a particular version of Windows 10 to shut down or go into sleep mode.

Microsoft has confirmed this problem on its Tech Community website and states sometimes the delay could be as long as 60 seconds, namely one minute.

An employee of Microsoft, Philip Froese gives an explanation to the Windows 10 delay shutdown. The main reason for this is a bug in Intel’s USB Type-C Connector System Software Interface (UCSI) software. This Windows 10 USB-C bug specifically impacts October 2018 Update, version 1809.

According to a support document from Microsoft, UCSI is bugged in Windows 10 version 1809. When you are shutting down your PC or it’s going to sleep, the problem is triggered if a device is being connected or disconnect via the USB Type-C port during the power-down operation.

If that happens, you will have to wait for an extra minute delay (on top of the normal shutdown time) while the UCSI software is busy handing a new connect or disconnect event of the Type-C device.

Windows 10 USB-C Bug Isn’t Serious

Since the initial release of Windows 10 in 2015, Windows V1809 is one of the buggiest releases, for example, it wipes users’ document, Intel audio device driver compatibility issue, etc. So, as for computer bugs, the Windows 10 shutdown delay bug is relatively benign.

But this bug makes the shutdown time twice as long as normal, letting you think it’s a long time. Especially when you get ready to leave your house, waiting for the PC to shut down or go to sleep for a minute can be unnerving.

Thankfully, this bug won’t have an influence on normal functionality of USB Type-C on your device apart for the extra one minute delay. Both the system and the USB Type-C ports are able to continue to work properly after the next wake or restart of the Windows system.

Additionally, the issue only happens on Windows 10 October 2018 Update and doesn’t impact the latest version of Windows 10. Thus, if you are running a newer than version 1809, there is nothing you worry about.

Reportedly, Microsoft hasn’t added this bug to the list of known issues for Windows 10 version 1809. Instead, it has posted an FAQ on the Microsoft USB blog to outline the issue.

No Patch, Just Upgrade

Windows 10 USB-C bug isn’t a huge problem, but it could certainly be an annoying and puzzling one. However, Microsoft doesn’t reveal any possible solution to Windows 10 slow shutdown but states this trouble has been removed out in the latest Windows 10 May 2019 Update. You should upgrade to this new version 1903.

Tip: Before Windows 10 update, you should back up your important files and the operating system with MiniTool ShadowMaker – free backup software so that you can recover lost files caused by update or roll Windows back to the previous version in case of a system crash.

That will be good except some potential software or hardware compatibility issues between Windows 10 V1903 and your PC occurs, then the update is blocked. If so, you can only avoid unplugging USB Type-C devices at shutdown time to sidestep Windows 10 shutdown delay.
