Do you know what “Windows 10 extended security updates” is? If you are unable to upgrade your device to Windows 11, you can enroll your PC in the paid Extended Security Updates (ESU) program to receive critical and important security updates. See details in this MiniTool guide.

Microsoft Announced Windows 10 Extended Security Updates

Since the original official version of Windows 10 was released on July 29, 2015, Windows 10 has been deeply welcomed among users for its stable and smooth performance, comprehensive and continuous security protection, powerful software, and clean user interface.

Earlier, Microsoft announced that Windows 10 will end support on October 14th, 2025. This means Windows 10 will no longer receive quality updates, new or updated features, security fixes for vulnerabilities, security updates, or technical support after this day.

Fortunately, Microsoft has announced the “Extended Security Updates” (ESU) program for Windows 10. The ESU program provides individual consumers and organizations of all sizes the opportunity to continue using Windows 10 after Windows 10 ends support on October 14, 2025.

Please note that the “Microsoft extended security updates for Windows 10” only includes critical and/or important security updates and does not include new features, customer-requested non-security updates, or design change requests, nor does it provide technical support outside of ESU itself.

You Can Upgrade to Windows 11 or Pay for ESU for Windows Security

Since Windows 10 ends support, Microsoft will no longer provide bug fixes for Windows-related issues, security fixes for vulnerabilities, time zone updates, or related technical support. Many users choose to update to the latest release of the Windows 11 operating system in order to protect their computers from harmful viruses, spyware, and other malware that can steal personal information.

However, as Microsoft officially mentioned, many users are unable to upgrade their devices to Windows 11 because they do not meet the minimum Windows 11 system requirements or due to some other reason:

“While we strongly recommend moving to Windows 11, we understand there are circumstances that could prevent you from replacing Windows 10 devices before the EOS date. Therefore, Microsoft will offer Extended Security Updates.”

Like the Windows 7 Extended Security Updates program, the Windows 10 ESU program annual subscription service is valid for up to three years. Currently, Microsoft has not officially announced the Windows 10 extended support cost, and final pricing and registration conditions are expected to be announced closer to the end of support in October 2025.
