Step 1: Scan the Hard Disk

  1. Remove the disk from Xbox One and connect it to your computer.
  2. Open the software and you will enter This PC module directly.
  3. Choose the target drive and click on Scan to start the scanning process.

First of all, you need to prepare for these things:

  • A Windows-based computer with an Internet connection and a USB port.
  • A USB flash drive with a minimum 4 GB of space formatted as NTFS.

Usually, a USB flash drive is formatted as FAT32 file system. Thus, you need to reformat the USB to NTFS in advance. Additionally, if there are some important files on the USB drive you are going to use, please back up its data or transfer it to another location in time.

In the following guide, we will walk you through the steps to perform an offline system update on Xbox One.

Step 1: Download the Offline System Update File (OSU1) to the USB Flash Drive

1. Connect the USB flash drive to your computer.

2. Download the Offline System Update file OSU1 which is a zip file to your computer.

3. Unzip it and copy the $SystemUpdate file from the .zip file to the USB flash drive.

Note: You need to copy the file to the root directory and there should be no other files on the USB drive.

4. Unplug the USB flash drive from your PC.

Step 2: Update Xbox One Console

When the Offline System Update file is saved to your USB flash drive, you can then install the file to your Xbox One console with the Offline System Update option on Xbox Startup Troubleshooter.

  1. Turn off the Xbox One console and unplug the power cord to make sure that the device is powered off completely. About 30 seconds later, plug the power cord back in the device.
  2. Press and hold the BIND button (on the left side of the device) and the EJECT button (on the front of the device). Then, press the Xbox Next, hold the BIND and EJECT buttons for 10-15 seconds.
  3. You will hear two “power-up” tones. You can release the BIND and EJECT buttons after the second power-up tone.
  4. The Xbox One console will turn on and enter the Xbox Startup Troubleshooter directly. After that, you can connect the USB flash drive to your Xbox One console. Then, the Offline System Update option on the Xbox Startup Troubleshooter will be available.
  5. You need to use the D-pad button and A button on the Xbox One controller to choose the Offline system update option to begin the update process with the file you have saved on the USB flash drive.
  6. When the update process is finished, the Xbox One will reboot. Then, you can check whether Xbox One green screen of death issue disappears.

If this solution doesn’t work, you may need to factory reset the device.

Software Issue - Factory Reset the Xbox One

Likewise, you still need these two preparations:

  • A Windows-based computer with an Internet connection and a USB port.
  • A USB flash drive with a minimum 4 GB of space formatted as NTFS.

Step 1: Download the FactoryReset Zip File to the USB Flash Drive

  1. Connect the USB flash drive to your computer.
  2. Download the FactoryReset zip file to your computer and unzip it.
  3. Copy the $SystemUpdate file to the USB flash drive. Still, you need to make sure that there is no other file on the USB flash drive.
  4. Remove the USB drive from the computer.

Step 2: Restore Xbox One to Factory Defaults

  1. Enter Xbox Startup Troubleshooter, and then connect the USB flash drive to the Xbox One console.
  2. Use the D-pad button and A button on the Xbox One controller to choose the Reset this Xbox option to reset your Xbox One console to factory defaults.
  3. After restoring your Xbox One to factory defaults, you can restart the device to see whether it can work normally again.
