Though Microsoft Edge is described as the fast and safe web browser offering wonderful browsing experience, it has actually struggled to gain market share in the past few years. Yet, there’s one highlight in Microsoft Edge – it has the best battery life when compared to other mainstream web browsers.

Developed by Microsoft aiming at replacing Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge is able to be used on Xbox, Android phone, iOS device and Windows 10 device currently. Yet,

  • It was first released in 2015 for Windows 10 and Xbox.
  • The Microsoft Edge for Android and iOS came out in 2017.

Till now, it has not gained much market share. Therefore, Microsoft decides to rebuild it as a Chromium-based browser now (it is originally built with the EdgeHTML and Chakra engines of Microsoft).

Microsoft Edge’s Battery Life Is the Best

Till recently, people find the best thing about this web browser: Microsoft edge’s battery life is the best; that is to say, it is considered as the best browser for battery life. This beats its rivals – Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.

After the release of Windows 10 version 1809, Microsoft thinks it is time to promote Edge once again, so as to compete with other mainstream web browsers, such as Chrome and Firefox. If Microsoft couldn’t update its Edge as frequent as its competitors, a fascinating highlight will help to attract more new users and keep some old users as well. The company hopes to narrow the gap in terms of market share day by day.

Here is the point: the battery life test shows that Microsoft Edge is doing better than many other web browsers in this aspect. In a long blog post of Microsoft, many details about the following things are included:

  • Learning Tools
  • Microsoft Edge
  • PDF improvements
  • Platform & Enterprise Management updates

Surprisingly, there is no bragging about the battery life of Edge. However, the fact proves that that battery of Edge on the October 2018 Update is more efficient than other browsers. Well, this point is ignored by many people.

Battery Life Test for Browsers

A streaming video test was carried out on identical Surface Book laptops (running Windows 10 October 2018 update) after it has been connected to Wi-Fi. The result is: the video streaming in Microsoft Edge 18 on the Surface Book lasts for about 16 hours. When you compare this result to Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, you’ll find:

  • It is almost 24% longer than Google Chrome (lasts for 13 hours).
  • It is almost 94% longer than Mozilla Firefox (lasts for 8 hours 16 minutes).

This set of experimental data is definitely impressive!

There is another battery life test organized on April 2017 on the Surface Books running the Windows 10 Creators Update. The experimental data show that the Edge device lasting about 35 percent longer than Chrome and about 77 percent longer than Firefox.

FYI: You should read this in case that your data is getting lost from a laptop.

It is also noticeable that Google has stepped into narrowing the gap between Chrome and Edge on the Surface Book, slowly but confirmedly, according to the battery life updates of Microsoft.

There’s one thing not clear: Microsoft didn’t tell more details about the browser efficiency comparison result. I think maybe it is because it’s not the right time yet.

As I have mentioned at the beginning of this article, Microsoft said that it was working on a new version of Microsoft Edge that will be powered by chromium. This version of Edge shares the same foundation with Google Chrome, so I guess its battery life will be reduced. Yet, this may be the must-have sacrifice for getting fewer compatibility issues and a bigger selection of extensions.
