Summary

After the release of new Windows 10 update, major Chromium performance issues are discovered. Hence, Microsoft has confirmed the problem and announced a warning to prevent the number of people affected by the issue from rising too fast. Microsoft also declared that they are working on findings ways to settle things down.

Microsoft has finally released the Windows 10 update people wanted. But, not long after the release, major Chromium performance issues are found.

Google Chrome Issues 2019: Chromium Performance Issues

What Causes the Google Chrome Browser Issues

It turns out that the update of the Control Flow Guard (CFG) is the direct cause of massive performance issues. Introduced with Windows 8.1, the CFG is an OS hardening security feature available in Windows 10; its main function is to combat memory corruption vulnerabilities. Yngve Pettersen, a developer at Vivaldi, discovered the performance issues.

  • Firstly, he added Win 10 to the Windows 10 unit test cluster of his organization.
  • Secondly, he recreated the performance issues on his home system.
  • Then, he has done the tests on Windows 10 and Windows 7 Pro.
  • After that, he compared the results and found the CreateProcess call is responsible for the performance decrease.
  • Finally, he sent a bug report to the Chromium team.

Bruce Dawson from Google team then noticed this problem, so he conducted lots of testing and investigation. Finally, he found it is CFG that causes the issues.

In fact, the performance issues are found on many Google Chromium-based browsers:

  • Google Chrome
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Vivaldi
  • And so on

Bruce Dawson forwarded the terrible issue to Microsoft, hoping it could give fix.

Mehmet Iyigun, a development manager on the Windows and Azure kernel team, confirmed the problem in late April, 2019. He said that Microsoft was working on the investigation of the root cause and they will build a fix in a couple of weeks.

Influences of Chrome Issues Today

  • Generally, the Chromium performance of an impacted Windows 10 computer runs 3 to 4 times slower than on Windows 7 (which is not influenced by the issues).
  • Though there is no evidence that end users of Chromium-based browsers were affected, the Chrome security issues have troubled developers a lot.
  • Microsoft gave a regular upgrade warning to explain the Windows 10 security feature issue.

Obviously, a fix is needed to deal with Google Chrome problems today.

How to Fix the Security Issues with Windows 10

The good news is: the end users are not likely to meet the same performance issues, which are presented in the test environment. It could be that this issue affects normal browser usage, too, since both Chrome and Vivaldi start new processes for each tab, but as much of the actual code is located in DLLs shared among the processes, and the Windows CFG configuration is reused for DLLs, it might not be as noticeable in normal use. - wrote Pettersen
